I picture you taking MyMother to your parents’ house. Once there, MyMother suffers the humiliation of picking her engagement ring out of a big heap of jewellery brought by my grandparents from the Soviet Union, eventually going for a yellow amethyst embedded in gold. She relishes in her disgrace (”he did not even bother to buy me a ring”) for the next thirty years of a thoroughly failed marriage.

After thirty years the amethyst ring is stolen by plumbers repairing bathroom pipes.
