I jeszcze uszy.
Różowawe, jakby ciepłe.

Uszy śpiącego człowieka.

=====

I remember you lying in the funeral chapel, right before cremation.
Your hands.
Ill at ease, as if you did not really know what to do with them.
How to position them.
And your ears, too.
Slightly pink, looking kind of warm.

The ears of a sleeping person.

Nigdy

Jakie to banalne, wszyscy to mówią – ból nie znika. Koegzystuje.

How trivial this is, everyone says the same thing – the pain never goes away. It coexists. Sometimes, stroked down with a distressed glass of home-made fruit liquor, it curls up and dozes off, delightfully anaesthetized, while the eyes reflect stains of light speeding one by one from night-time TV shows. My eyes transfixed on the screen, looking without seeing. When I am alone, when the house is asleep, I like hearing voices of people, even if the people are just made up.

You and I will never talk again.
The word 'never' tastes like fruit liquor.

Buty

A w niej:
1. Kluczyki do samochodu
2. Portfel
3. Dokumenty

I jeszcze duży worek foliowy z twoim imieniem i nazwiskiem namazanym czarnym markerem.
W środku ubranie.
Bez butów.

Wyskoczyłeś bez butów.
Nie zostawiłeś listu.

Almost a year has passed since the disturbing phone call that rang and rang and rang when I was queuing in my bank, and then informed me in the shaky voice of my brother that you were dead.

You are not here and you will never be because you died – on that very day.

You fell from the balcony of your third-floor flat.
These are the facts.

You died in hospital despite the three-hour fight that ER doctors put up to save the paltry bit of your life that would not leave you when you crushed your pelvis against a concrete slab, deluging your lungs with blood from your smashed internal organs.

I am just wondering.
I would like to know.

When you were in the ER, did you use all your will power to stifle the meagre spark that might have kept you in this world, because you did not want to live any longer?

After all, they tried to save you for three hours.
After all, they almost succeeded.
Almost.
These were the words of the doctor.
And also: but these injuries were ultimately too much for a single person.

The only thing left for us in the hospital was a dedicated plastic bag.
So-called High Security Bag.
Containing:
1. Your car keys
2. Your wallet
3. Your documents

And also a large plastic bag with your name and surname scrawled in black marker.
With your clothes inside.
Without shoes.

You jumped without your shoes on.
You left no note.
